Home of the "Rocky Top" Landrace.
We are a small homestead in the Colorado Rocky Mountians. Our altitude of 8700' we wanted breeds that would do well in high altitude and cold, they also needed to be dual purpose.
We decided on making our own landrace, by crossing European, and northern European breeds, such as Lakenvelders, Barnevelders, and Marans, who are cold hearty breeds with production breeds, such as AustraWhite's, Buff Orps, Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rock, and Leghorns. We decided on these breeds for their egg laying ability, cold tolerance and broodiness. We have found that the Marans lay throughout winter, they along with Austrawhites were the first to start laying after molt, and our Rocky Tops from last year started laying at 5 months, so far so good. We have also added Guineas to the homestead this year, Pearls, Royal Purple and Pinto. They make great watch dogs, and not much gets by them! We also keep Bantam Cochins, and Silkies, mainly for fun, but they are great little incubators!
